Sisyphus was the founder and king of what now is commonly known as Corinth and was famed as the craftiest and most clever of men (according to Homer). He continuously plotted to kill his brother and get away with it. He betrayed Zeus to get some spring flowing again on his island. Zeus punished him by chaining him to the Underworldly Mount Tartarus. In order to escape, Sisyphus tricked his jailor Thanatos/Hades and subsequently jailing him. The King escaped only to be captured again by Ares. After more than some threats by the Gods on the quality of his life, Sisyphus conceded, freed Thanatos/Hades, and was let go. By the time he truly was at the end of his life and about to pass away, he convinced his wife to throw his corpse on the public square as a test of her love to him. However, this was just another ruse to be able to escape death. When Sisyphus ended up in the Underworld again he complained to Persephone about how awful and disrespectful his wife had treated his remains by throwing them out in public. Off his spirit went, haunting his wife for not giving him the funeral he deserved. By this time the Gods had their fill of Sisyphus' antics, and had Hermes drag him back to the Underworld. Finally in Hades' realm, Sisyphus was punished for his arrogance, in thinking he was more clever than almighty Zeus. His punishment was to push a boulder to the top of a hill, only to have the boulder magically roll away near the end, making the once King start all over again.
